Project RTR : Race Results Despite spending six hours at the hospital only two hours before the R.O.C.K.S. race in Fairfield, California, I was still excited enough to attend this race for footage and results of this setup and mods. The track layout would be changed for the Micro race. So we had a dedicated practice session before the heats. Only ten people signed up to race, but I saw at least that many more in the pits. Too bad they all didn't enter. To summarize, the rules only stated that a kit stock motor must be used, with a maximum of 5 cells. There was actually a guy running foam tires, but since he wasn't doing so well in the heats I left it alone. I should have took pictures, but I was dealing with abdominal pain most of the day. During practice, it was clear I had the fastest and most consistent Micro. A few people actually thought I was running 6 cells. I was very happy with the way the car was handling. It was easy to drive, but there was a hint of oversteer if I was too hot into a corner. No problem, I'll just slow down a little more. The layout of the track didn't require the use of the brakes at all. Just ease off the throttle and turn. I ran for about five or six minutes when I remembered that I had picked up some soft compound rear tires the day before. So I put them on and noticed that the car pushed now. It only took me too laps to decide I liked the kit tires better. Before the practice, I sauced the tires with traction compound, but the car was real loose for at least three laps, so I decided not to use it anymore. The track was sprayed with some generic root beer, so traction was decent. The ten drivers were split into two heats; I was in the second heat which was heat 18 of the day! So I had a lot of downtime between racing to talk to some of the other Micro guys. SSRberni set the TQ time in the first heat, which I then beat in my heat by over a lap. After the second round of qualifying I bettered my previous TQ by a lap and change. There is some video that SSRberni took of that heat on the Micro Movies page, so make sure to check it out if you haven't already. When the A-Main finally came, three of the ten drivers didn't show up. I don't really blame them since it was the LAST race of the day and around six in the evening. This included Gus Rosal, the second qualifier. He was only three of four seconds short of matching the number of laps I TQ'ed with. He would have made for some good competition. I led the A-main from start to finish, lapping the entire field. There is some half way decent footage of this race on the Micro Movies page as well. It wasn't as warm as earlier, and the track had lost some of its traction, no doubt due to all the nitro cars running on the same track. It took me a little while to get used to the new surface, and there were more people to get around, so I was about a lap slower then my TQ, oh well. During the entire day, I used the same (new) stock motor with the biggest kit pinion. I also used kit tires, and the same battery for every race. I started to recharge the battery on my Novak Millennium at 1 amp about an hour before each race. Not once did I discharge it completely. The only thing I had to do between heats is brush off all the tire dust from the car and inside of the body. . Compare that to racing 1/10 scale sedans. After a few of my heats I did notice that some of my outer wheels were pressed farther onto the inner wheel. This must have been caused by crashing. In one case, one of the front wheels ended up on the narrowest setting. This can be a major issue, because the width can change the way the car handles. The ridges on the inside of the outer wheel get their ends rounded which makes it easier to slide farther then you want. If there is way to keep this from happening, short from gluing them on, I will find it and let everyone know. That's it for now. Tony Leone
