hockeypux19,

no offense...but please dont insult me with 3-letter words like "cnc". jk- cnc is fine for you young'ems.

I can unequivocally make this statement:
ABSOLUTELY, no cnc have been used on ANY of my molds to make my lids. cnc requires CAD or other software to setup. Sorry, but I'm not a propellerhead and frankly, I dont have the time of day to figure out software design when my hands and hand tools can do the job better, but not necessarily so fast. This is a hobby for me, not a race....

All done by hand with a couple of homeRmade jigs setup to get the proper square cuts.
I use drawings and sketches and scale down to fit the actual chassis....nothing else....old school methodology.

This material is 'renshape' - expensive but easy to work with - I just started using this stuff. This is the 2nd mold using this material.

btw, NOTE: The fender flares were added on as separate pieces since I couldnt figure out how to get it done as part of the main block...

Your Throughbread is looking A-mazing there Mr.Claus

Can't wait to see a finished lid. Are wider fenders flares in your plans?

Is this renshape material like hard clay? It looks like it. What are those white lines on the lid?

Sometimes "old school" is the "best school"

Very nice. "Scrape that Shape."

Maybe it's the shadows but those undercuts look like they mean business.

Hi Ken,

I haven't tested this on the vacuum yet. If the undercuts on the 'flared' wheel wells pose a problem, (I don't think they will..)then I can just add another layer to the wheel openings to remove the undercut.

None taken buddy.....I use renshape clay and styrofoam on a daily basis....I work 60 hrs a week in a product design studio....Automotive based exteriors to be exact. Thats why I get so excited when I see someone like yourself so involved in these "toys" LOL heard that to many times. I think its great to see. As far as young em's go I'm 38 and have cut my teeth on clay for years...Hell I have made vac molds from bars of dove soap for HO slot cars for years. I love seeing your projects and keep up the good work.. Offer still stands if you want some help with your projects....Dont hesitate to contact me at hockeypux19.yahoo.com. Trust me I am very familiar with old school technique...New school as well...White
light scan is the latest groove in the studio....Just paint the physical model white and within minutes you can cut your model......Its really cool. Love to show you sometime. I know you would like it.

Anyhow.. sorry for the rant
Merry Christmas Homer,

Mark

lol - I guessimated your age to be younger ....(i'm a bad guesser...) lol you're only 7 years my junior.

as far as new school methodology, I havent kept up with "the jone's", but from the research I did about a year ago, up in my area, the cost of prototyping via cnc was way out of line (price gouging to be exact...) for doing a micro lid. Doing everything by old school isnt cheap either, but its sure alot of fun seeing the body come alive. I just wish I could get the prcing of cncing down to a reasonable level (ie. less than my cost of doing it by hand..)The vacuum forming part is easiest for me since Ive got my own setup.
As far as assisting...lmk what you've got and what can possibly be done on the cnc side of things. I got a list of cars/trucks the length of my 2 arms to add to my growing collection

now I just have to build/find a nice showcase for all these lids.

Merry Christmas
homer

Thanks for the suggestion. I think I'll be placing them in a nice enclosed glass case, to minimize the dust collection.
