A few months back I dropped a 540 into my Micro. It had some issues, didn't really work, and I shelved the project. But since that day I've had numerous insights and help from other RC fans (quietfly and others) how to make it better and tonight I decided to implement some of those new ideas and revisit the old 540 Micro. And the result?
This thing is CCCCCRRRRAAAAAAAZZZZZZZYYYYYYY fast. I mean insanely fast. Out of control fast. Spinning tires, burning rubber, launching, screaming-down-the-street fast. Faster than my T-Maxx fast. Yes, quite a bit faster actually. It's basically rediculous, but I intend to tame it, to break it like a wild horse, until it's drivable and raceable.
Right now, straight line, it's sickening. I mean it's sickening. Absoluletly make you wanna puke it's so fast and so powerful. I'll give details later. I threw it together in like an hour, so don't rail on the setup. It's got A LOT of rework to go through. I still need to reinforce the rear motor pod of the chassis with aluminum, just to hold the weight of the 540!
congrats, you are probably the 3rd member in a very elite club. Its going to be very hard to go back to that "tiny" 400 now
Not to say i told you so, but
I've been preaching the goodness of ultra big blocks and SUb C cells for quite some time. I wish i lived on the same coast as you i'd love to run you and see if 540 is truely better than 480
You're right, first thing is to drop to 4 cells. I used 6 just b/c that's what I had lying around. 4 should be ideal, maybe even five, and they need to be orientated properly on the chassis as well. I may go to a whole new chassis all together. I need to rework the rear deck so I can get that installed on there with the VCS shock. Otherwise the only mods are to the motor mount and the rear axle carrier as well as the axle. I'll get some video of it later on today. I've only got a cheesy 1200 mAh stick pack in there right now, but I plan to drop in some 3000 or 3300 VIS matched cells. A new motor would help too since this one dates back to 1984. I don't even know what turn it is.
I know this is kinda out in left field for a Micro, and most people are satisfied to drop in a BB or Speed 300, I just somtimes get carried away with things and I like taking things to the extreme. I'll keep anyone interested posted.
hah au got me trying to make one for my car right now too lol i ahve my 4 cell 2400 matched pack already made for it lol now i just need to make a motor plate and mod the rear pod and it should work i hope what did u use to make the motor plate ?
next time u get on aim i will talk to u (im xtremeredrider21) just incase u didnt know lol

Now if you can make it AWD with the 540 I'll really be impressed as if I am not already... It would be cool to see a Micro smoke a Carpet Knife or RC12 around a track...

Okay I took some more pics. I got the rear deck modded and installed. I put on my old 350Z body and cut out the tire wells. If thing doesn't look like the freeking XTM 24.7 conversion kit for a Micro I don't know what is!
Once again, the setup is rough I know. But since the basic concept actually works, I think starting from scratch and making all the necessary hopups and mods along the way, you could actually get a really good looking 540 Micro.
I'll have a vid up later on today, hopefully. I haven't done the chassis reinforcing yet, so one rollover and it's bye-bye Ratzas Pro Pan. So I maight not want to risk it, just yet, but we'll see.
I ran my first full pack through it. And all I can say is - it is fast. Down right speed. And it's actually controllable. I was only driving in my front yard, but on carpet, I imagine it would only be even more drivable. It handles just like it did with any smaller motor, yet it sounds like a 1/12th scale pan car. It's got that real high, real clean Wwwwwwhhhhheeeeeeeeezzzzzz sound to it. I mean it's unreal, I've never seen anything like it.
But inevitably, I hit a rock in the road, and the car rolled head over heals as I watched my rear ball differential scatter in pieces all over the road. The axle snapped right at the threads. And there's no more thread left to hold on the wheel anymore. So that's it for me! I need either a new diff, or a new axle. And since it's a GH, I doubt I can get just the axle. Maybe Vince could hook me up with one?
Anyway, here's the last pic. I need to fix it asap, cuz I really want to race this sucker on Wednesday. People at the track are going to freak. It is so awesome. Just plain awesome.
put some heatshrink on your receiver before I go over there and smack you, you nut!
awesome setup.
BTW - I saw on your t-maxx site that you made some skidplates for your maxx? How much do you want to make me a set? I just got a 2.5 T-maxx yesterday
And I'll admit it, the jerky starts from a standstill with the thing almost made me cry, it looks and sounds really bad, but the manual says its normal, and so did the DVD...so whatever
my speed 400 micro is up on eBay now, maybe with my new one (after I get a penguin pan for it) I will try a 540 motor in it...
BUMP...I've been working on a new chassis design that is more capable of withstanding the demands of the 540 motor. This is a prototype chassis configuration made of .065 fiberglass. It's fairly rough, still in the design stages, but I wanted to build something concrete that I could work off of till I could finalize a really robost design. Once I finish messing with the fiberglass, I'll recut everything in aluminum, or maybe even carbon fiber. The rear deck-posts will be aluminum as well. It should be really nice once it's done.
I wanted to get some opinions from people to just see what you guys think. Try to ignore the fact that it's yellow and some of my cuts aren't totally smooth. The design is incredibly simple, and it kinda has to stay that way, just b/c of the limited tools I have to work with. Comments are welcomed!

I just want to add how light it is and how strong it feels already. Wooohheeee!
great job on all the custom work you are doing. i would love have that motor and chassis. some black paint would make her look nice!!how much MPH increase do you think this motor is compared to your vid of the 27MPh micro??

Dan, I would love to get specs and dimensions on that 540 motor plate, my friend works in a machine shop and could make them for people...would be a sick conversion
