Micro RS4 FAQ How fast is the Micro? Out of the box with the stock motor and 4AA cells, it should be anywhere between 10-20mph depending on the weight of your electronics. Where can I get one? Look in your phone book for any Hobby Shops that might be near you. If they have it in stock, you really shouldn't have to spend more then $130 US for a kit. There are lots of Hobby Shops on-line that sell them as well. You will pay between $99-$120 US if you buy it on-line. I would recommend you try your local hobby shop first, that's why they are there. Plus if you need help, the employees will be more eager to help you if you bought your car from them, although most good hobby shops should help everyone. Is the Micro hard to assemble because it is so small? It actually isn't. There are lots of small parts that may get lost, so setting up a clean work area when assembling the Micro is the key. Also pay close attention to the left over plastic on parts when you take them off of the parts tree. These little leftovers can cause a lot of problems, especially in the diffs. See Build a Better Front Diff in the Tips & Mods section of this site. What bodies are there for the Micro? Currently HPI is only offering the Dodge Viper, Nissan Skyline GTR, and the BMW M3. I've seen pictures of other bodies overseas, but those were probably aftermarket, and are not available here yet. This car is so popular that in the next few months there will be dozens of bodies available. Which Micro should I get? The Viper, Skyline, or BMW? If you plan on racing, or trying to modify your Micro to make it crazy fast, you may want to go with the Viper or the Skyline. The Viper would probably be the best choice for racing because it has a wider track and shorter wheelbase than both the Skyline and BMW. The BMW has the narrowest track, and a longer wheelbase than the Viper. The Skyline's wheelbase is the same as the BMW's, but has a slightly wider track. What else do I need once I get the kit? You will at the very least need a Radio/Receiver, Servo, and Electronic Speed Control (ESC). The beauty of it is that this car will fit standard size electronics. It isn't necessary to get micro servos, receivers or ESC's, but the smaller and lighter stuff will make your Micro faster. Just keep in mind that the smaller things are, the more they typically cost. You will also need some Lexan Paint, and basic hand tools. What kind of radio should I get? Just about any pistol grip style radio should do. Just make sure it has Steering Dual Rate Adjustment. This allows you to control exactly how much the steering servo will move in both directions. Higher end radios will also have Adjustable Travel Volume (ATV), or End Point Adjustment (EPA), where you can limit the servo travel differently for each direction, as opposed to equally, with Steering Dual Rate. Since the Micro is so small, the servo doesn't need to use all of its travel. If you can't limit this from the radio, your servo will keep working is self loose as the excess travel causes the servo to twist on the servo tape. What type of servo should I get? A standard servo works just fine, but I would recommend a smaller servo. It will make your Micro a little lighter and a little faster. One of the current favorites is the Hitec HS-81 Micro Servo which you can get for under $25. What type of Electronic Speed Control Should I get? Again, just about any will do. Smaller is always better. One of the most popular ones seems to be the LRP Quantum Reverse. It's small, it's light, it has reverse...what more could you ask. These go for anywhere between $85 and $99 US. What kind of batteries should I get? I highly recommend that you get some high capacity Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMh) AA cells. You can get these just about anywhere. Just make sure the capacity is at least 1600mAh. With a stock motor, you should expect run times over an hour with these cells. I bought a couple of sets at Best Buy. 4 1600mAh cells and a Charger. You can also buy 4 packs of these cells from Target and Walmart for about $12 without a charger. Radio shack also has them, but 4 cells will cost you almost $20. Alkalines also work, but I have found that they loose all their punch after about 2 minutes with a stock motor. They just can't handle the on-off current draw of an r/c car. It has been reported that regular Nicad rechargables have more punch then the NiMh, but the run time is no where near as long. |
